about

In November of 1991, a little over 25 years ago, Psyclone Smyle, an indie-funk-rock band from Balmain, Sydney, launched their debut EP “Real Soul Pleaser” to the wider world.
Signed at the time to Festival Records, they were part of a wave of alternative rock bands that were starting to infiltrate the greater consciousness of a city outside of their own inner city habitat.
After nearly 200 shows in four seemingly short years, the band eventually disappeared into the cracks of Australian music nostalgia, and Portable Hole Recordings has finally seen fit to re-release their catalogue as a way of celebrating the band, some quarter of a century later.
The “Real Soul Pleaser” EP is the first in a series of Psyclone Smyle reissues and rarities that will be released in 2017.

“It was a breeze locating Psyclone Smyle. I just had to follow the sounds of a band rehearsing in a Balmain backyard…There’s something of a vibe hovering halo-like about the four members of Psyclone Smyle”
- Jeff Apter, Drum Media, 1991.

“Live, the band try and live up to their name. In fact, if you can tie yourself to the bar, you might like to consider it.”
- Jessica Adams, On The Street, 1991.

“Raw power, and energy are the two most overwhelming aspects of Psyclone Smyle both found in abundance on Real Soul Pleaser, creeping through the songs as though (they) are things of experimentation.”
- Andrew Khedoori, Drum Media, 1991.

“A funkomatic whirlwind with batteries included…”
- Simon Killalea, Drum Media, 1991.
