about

In the early days of 2009, the word went out that the revivalists of the Sydney Mod scene were thinking about the 30th Anniversary of the legendary Mod's Mayday gig of 1979. The rise of social media had shown that many were willing and able to gather in tribute, thirty years down the track.
So, the call went out from the annual Sydney Mods Mayday gig promoters to any interested and available musicians from the heady days of the 1980s Sydney Mod revival: would they get a combo together and play a few classic tunes from the era?

That first lineup consisted of Mark Alchin (The Clones, The Reasons Why), Greg Noyes (The Introverts), Keith Claringbold (The Introverts, The Amazing Woolloomooloosers), Chris Newton (The Never Land, Psyclone Smyle), Phil Milner (The Jump Boys, The Citroens), Greg Hearnden (The Key, The Persuaders), Steve Mulrooney (The Hunchbacks, The Stayns) and Ed Codsi (The Upbeat, The Reasons Why). Early rehearsals also featured Mark Mulligan and Pete Iacono of The Fingerguns.
The four guitar/two bass attack was only ever intended to play the one show…

Sounding a bit like a Phil Spector production of The Jam, they played that first show as part of the Mods Mayday 30th Anniversary Show in May 2009. After a second show, the first lineup change occurred with Mark Alchin, Ed Codsi and Steve Mulrooney all moving on to pursue other interests, and a new drummer in guitarist Greg’s teenage son Bryce Hearnden was recruited to the cause.

In 2010 lead guitarist Phil Milner decided to depart, and the band considered calling it a day. After a considerable break, and now a five piece, The Mayday Dreamers were asked to play what they thought would likely be one last show in early 2011.

In late 2011, having decided to keep playing for the fun of it all, another guitarist/keyboard player was added to the fold. Pete Kowal of The Accent added a new element to the wall of sound, and the band started to move beyond their Mod origins into a more power pop-new wave vibe. Bryce Hearnden had also decided to move on, and concentrate on his studies amongst other things, and drummer Scott Egginton from The Key was invited to fill the seat, which he did for the band’s final two years.

Despite having played several great shows in 2012 and 2013, The Mayday Dreamers performed their last ever show at The Australian Classic Scooter Rally in October, 2013.

After four years, the band that had formed for one show only seemed to have run its course, having racked up more than ten follow up performances through four lineup changes and a total of twelve members. The final lineup luckily recorded one of their last ever studio rehearsals, leaving a small but lasting legacy of their existence in Sydney’s live music scene.
